Have you ever dreamed about building your own guitar? Did you ever want to learn how a guitar is crafted and wanted to attempt it yourself? After building over 300 instruments I have reached a point where I am teaching others what I have learned. Acoustic Guitar Custom HeadstockThe Builder’s Workshop began when I was approached by the Adult Education Program in Farmington, Maine. The workshop was offered as a night course running for 12 weeks and attended by several local musicians who expressed a strong interest in constructing their own instruments. After completing the course the participants left not only with a great guitar but with a true understanding of what it takes to produce an excellent instrument. As word started to spread, more interest was generated and I began to have requests from individuals who had been looking for a chance just like this. Classes here now run full time throughout the year, with both day and evening sessions that work around your schedule.

The builder’s workshop can be attended in two different ways. For those who live local to the shop, evening classes are available one evening a week. They run for approximately 12 weeks, 5:30-9:30pm. You can attend on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. For those who are further away, a 5 day course is offered starting on Mondays, from 8:00 AM-5:00pm with a one hour lunch break. Lunch is provided each day at the shop for your convenience.

The course is designed to give you a hands on experience in guitar building. Choose from 2 different body types built very close to the Martin style. The 2 options are standard Dreadnought or Triple 000 14 fret. Working with high quality serviced materials, you will be guided each step of the way as you craft your very own guitar.  These are high quality guitars with incredible tone and sound. Extensive wood working skills are not required, but the willingness to follow instructions and try new things is a plus. Those who are up for more of a challenge may select from different tone woods, extensive marquetry, custom shell work, high-end electronics, and even cutaway builds at additional cost. Our custom options and upgrades cost much less than you would pay for custom factory work.

This is a one-on-one experience: student and luthier. Each day we will be busy hitting benchmarks to ensure the completion of your guitar. From joining the 2 back plates to scalloping top braces, from neck set to final setup, you will see your guitar come to life. Because of the labor intensity and time involved in the finishing process, I will personally finish your instrument and ship it to you when completed. Those who are local may return to do the final neck set and setup. The price of the course is $2,400.00 and includes a hard shell case. Payment is due at the start of the course. Feel free to call me for more details and available start dates. Take a couple minutes while you’re here to enjoy the slides of the entire process put together by one of our satisfied student builders, Das Thamattoor.

I can be reached at 207-778-9415 Monday through Saturday from 8am – 5pm. Hope to see you soon! ~ Bill Russo
